| Paper conservation and restoration is a particular
skill at Chivers- Period Bookbinders. Paper is cleaned,
repaired, de acidified and restored back to its original
state by our skilled restoration staff.
Until the mid-19th century most paper was handmade and
could withstand the ravages of time quite well. However,
paper made subsequently is invariably machine made, and
does not cope with time and environmental pollution in the
same way as its predecessors.
We have over a quarter of a century experience in helping
paper survive the stresses exerted on it by our modern environment.
We continually upgrade our skills and techniques to keep
abreast of the most up to date methods and materials.
We are experienced in handling both printed and manuscript
text, either bound or in folio formats. We also have a depth
of expertise in working with large maps and drawings.
Our craftsmen and women work to exacting standards and
use only materials of known archival quality.
Our range of conservation treatments include dry cleaning,
washing, aqueous de-acidification, non aqueous de-acidification,
traditional repairs, heat set repairs, leaf casting, lamination,
mould treatment and mounting.
We offer our clients a free, no obligation, estimating
service, that gives a full written estimate of costs and
recommendations for treatment.
We will also supply a written and or photographic record
of the work we have carried out covering the process from
first assessment to the completed article.
